Application of Hastelloy Pipe

Chemical Processing:
Hastelloy pipes are commonly used in the chemical industry for transporting corrosive chemicals, acids, and bases. They can withstand the corrosive effects of various chemicals and maintain their structural integrity.

Oil and Gas:
In the oil and gas industry, Hastelloy pipes are used in drilling, extraction, and processing operations where exposure to corrosive environments, such as sour gas containing hydrogen sulfide (H2S), is a concern.

Petrochemical:
Hastelloy alloys are used in petrochemical plants for piping systems that handle aggressive chemicals and high-temperature processes. They are particularly suitable for applications involving hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and other corrosive substances.

Aerospace

In aerospace applications, Hastelloy alloys are used for engine components and exhaust systems due to their ability to withstand high-temperature and corrosive conditions.

Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology

The pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries use Hastelloy pipes for the transport of corrosive fluids and chemicals during the manufacturing of drugs and bio-products.

Desalination

Hastelloy alloys are used in desalination plants, where seawater or brackish water is processed to produce fresh water. The resistance to corrosion is crucial in this application.

Power Generation

In power plants, particularly those using fossil fuels or nuclear reactors, Hastelloy pipes are used for handling hot and corrosive gases and liquids. They are also used in heat exchangers.

FAQ

Q: Is Hastelloy better than stainless steel?

A: Thanks to its higher nickel and molybdenum content, Hastelloy is much stronger than stainless steel. This makes it suitable for use in extreme environments with high temperatures and pressures.

Q: Where is Hastelloy used?

A: Hastelloy is one of the main manufacturing materials used in industries that operate in highly corrosive environments such as petrochemistry, oil and gas, and marine industries.

Q: How do you weld Hastelloy?

A: HASTELLOY alloy X can be welded by metallic-arc, inert-gas-shielded arc, submerged-melt, and SIGMA methods. Hardness and tensile properties of welds made by these methods can be found on pages 6 and 11 respectively.

Q: Why is welding Hastelloy so hard?

A: Sluggish Weld Puddle and Shallow Penetration: Nickel-based alloys like Hastelloy tend to have a more viscous (sluggish) molten weld pool compared to stainless steels or carbon steels. This makes the puddle less fluid and can hinder proper flow and wetting of the joint edges, potentially leading to incomplete fusion.
